The Carnival date depends on when the Catholic holy week. This year is marked on the calendar between April 14, Palm Sunday, and the 21 of the same month, Easter Sunday. The forty days prior to that second Sunday, is supposed to be a period of recollection and penance, because it is Lent for Catholics. But first, it’s time to enjoy a few days off in which “Don Carnal” will propose dances, parties, parades, music and fun for everyone.
So, knowing when Holy Week takes place, you simply have to count back forty days (excluding Sundays) and you will know, each year, when Caranaval arrives.
Specifically this year Lent begins on March 6, that is, on Ash Wednesday. The previous day, March 5, is Shrove Tuesday, and that will be, in theory, the last day of parties and masks. As for the exact start date it depends on each locality. Carnivals generally begin the previous Thursday, but there are many municipalities that advance their start.
