How to make shampoo at home? Having a natural product for your hair is simple

In the same way that making soaps at home is a fairly simple process, if you like natural cosmetics, you can also prepare organic shampoos, free chemical elements and substances such as silicones and parabens.

It is true that you currently have a wide variety of “natural” cosmetic products, although the National Association of Perfumery and Cosmetics points out that some of them are not made with 100% natural ingredients given the difficulty in their formulation. On the other hand, if you want, you can make your own shampoo at home without resorting to any chemical element.

Steps to make a natural shampoo

You have different options, all valid and simple to carry out your purpose. Making this hair hygiene product will require, in any case, a neutral base solution, which will be the one to which you add the different ingredients that you want your shampoo to carry according to your type of hair and its needs (greasy, dry, lack of shine, with a tendency to frizz …)

You can find these bases in specialized stores in organic products, such as those certified by the Association of Ecological and Natural Cosmetics of Spain (ACENE). In these establishments it is easy to find natural neutral bases already prepared so that you only have to create your shampoo by mixing, as an expert perfumer, essential oils, foods rich in proteins, flower essences, honey, plants with specific properties … whatever you want.

This is the simplest formula, but you can also try to make the base yourself resorting to the plant called saponaria, known and used since ancient times in the production of soaps and ointments.

To make the base, the leaves, flowers and root of the plant are used, which is sold already dried in many herbalists. You should boil leaves and roots in an appropriate pot, in a approximate proportion of 100 grams for each liter or liter and a half of water. Let it boil for about 15 minutes. When the liquid obtained cools, you will have to strain it.

Logically, this base will not have the same texture as a shampoo that is usually sold, but that does not mean that it is less effective nor that I will take less care of your hair. Even so, if you want a denser result, you can use a natural thickener, such as the well-known Xanthan gum.

Rest of ingredients

To this base, you can add the combinations of ingredients that you consider necessary to create your perfect shampoo. You can incorporate for example:

  • A few drops of rosemary essential oil to strengthen hair and prevent hair loss.
  • Half crushed papaya together with the juice extracted from two aloe vera leaves, ideal to nourish in depth and to alleviate problems of irritation or itching of the scalp.
  • A few drops of vinegar to give the hair extra shine.
  • A few sheets of fresh mint and a few drops of lemon balm essential oil, to combat excess fat.

This is just a small sample, because the best thing about making your own shampoo at home is that you can prepare and customize it however you want.
