Home remedies for teeth whitening

It is evidence: teeth yellow over time. It is not a disease, nor does it have consequences on our health, it is more an aesthetic issue that can affect our social presence.

Our teeth undergo a natural and inevitable process of yellowing in which some factors – such as certain foods or medicines – may intervene that accelerate it, but fortunately there are also some remedies that can improve the appearance of our teeth (without going through the dentist and without our pocket suffering).

Let’s go to the origin: under the enamel of the tooth we have a pale brown substance called dentine. When enamel thins, wears down, becomes thinner, this substance becomes more visible, something that is usually quite common as we get older..

We also know that there are some habits or factors that favor our enamel to wear out. Thus the high consumption of coffee, tea, red wine or some carbonated drinks; tobacco; processed foods that are highly acidic; the use of some antibiotics or certain treatments that cause the mouth to be dry and genetic factors are some of the causes why our teeth turn yellow.

Taking into account these factors, we can already deduce that some are unavoidable, but that others depend on our consumption habits and also on our hygienic habits. By modifying these harmful habits and insisting on good oral cleaning, we would have half the way..

So, let’s start the list of remedies to make our teeth whiter for the basics:

  • Brushing three times a day: Three minutes, three times a day. That could be the recipe for correct brushing. It is very important to brush your teeth after eating (especially if we have consumed food or drinks that can discolor it).
  • Whitening products. Toothpaste, whitening strips or whitening rinses are some of the solutions that the market offers. All of them have a small amount of carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide that, according to some studies, lighten the color of the tooth in one or two shades.

But, if instead of going to the market you prefer home remedies, here are some that can help you regain a white smile. Take note:

Hydrogen peroxide and baking soda paste

Baking soda and hydrogen peroxide are among the most widely used home remedies for teeth whitening. Mix baking soda and hydrogen peroxide into a toothpaste and use it in place of your regular toothpaste. Just add a few drops of peroxide to the baking soda and stir until a paste forms. Then put it on your toothbrush and you’re done.

It is not recommended to use this paste on a daily basis because both ingredients are abrasive and can damage teeth. It is best to use it for 3 to 5 days and then wait 3 to 6 months to use it again.

You can also use just the baking soda: mix one teaspoon of baking soda with two teaspoons of water and brush your teeth with the mixture several times a week. After several weeks, you will begin to notice its whitening effect.

Another variant is to add lemon. The sodium bicarbonate and citric acid particles in lemon help to achieve a whitening and antibacterial paste; applying it regularly on stained teeth removes impurities, fights tartar and prevents yellowing. Just mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda with 5 drops of lemon juice, mix them well, apply the mixture with your toothbrush and let it act for a couple of minutes, rinse and voila. Use the treatment once a week.

Apple vinager

Diluted apple cider vinegar makes any toothpaste more effective. It is advisable to dilute it in triple the amount of water and then mix it with a natural toothpaste and brush as usual. You can also try gargling with apple cider vinegar.

Coconut oil

Coconut oil contains fatty acids that break down into teeth whitening enzymes when they come into contact with saliva. The combination of your saliva and these fatty acids produces an oxygen molecule that sticks to stains on your teeth. This rust-free remedy creates a chemical reaction that removes stains as you brush and rinse.

Gargle with coconut oil. Simply put a tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth and move it between your teeth for five minutes. If you prefer, you can make a toothpaste or follow this recipe: first, heat a cup of coconut oil until it becomes liquid. Then add two teaspoons of baking soda and 5-10 drops of peppermint to the liquid mixture and stir. In any case, do not abuse the time of the oil in the mouth.

The banana

Contains abundant potassium, magnesium and manganese, it also removes yellow tint from teeth. You just have to peel a ripe banana and rub your teeth with the inside of the peel for about two minutes, rinse and repeat before going to sleep. After three weeks, your teeth will be white.

Foods high in vitamin C

Citrus fruits, and especially the peel of oranges and lemons, are very beneficial due to their high acidity. The orange peel, like the banana peel, contains salicylic acid, a compound that blocks the teeth and protects the enamel against deterioration, in addition, the citric acid that it contributes also helps whitening. Use the inside of the shell to massage the stained teeth for three minutes, leave it on for 30 minutes and brush your teeth normally. Use it once a day.

Strawberry jam

Strawberry has whitening properties due to its malic acid content which is ideal for dissolving coffee, red wine, and tea stains on teeth. Grind 1 or 2 strawberries and add a teaspoon of baking soda. Rub this mixture on your teeth for 5 to 7 minutes. Then floss to remove the seeds from the stuck strawberries. It is not good to use this remedy too much, the acid in the jam can sting your teeth and, in the worst case, make them more susceptible to staining.

Beer yeast

This nutritional supplement is rich in proteins, folic acid and vitamins of group B, beneficial for the teeth. Thanks to its active ingredients, it facilitates the elimination of food residues accumulated on the teeth and prevents the formation of tartar and stains. It is usually sold in the form of flakes. Mix two tablespoons of brewer’s yeast, 1 teaspoon of salt and water (as necessary) until you get a thick paste, take a good amount with the brush and rub it on the teeth for three minutes, repeat four times a week.

Activated carbon

This is a product that is used to detoxify as it traps toxins and, in the case of teeth, absorbs the microorganisms that form plaque. It is used as a toothpaste, two or three times a week. Mix charcoal with a small amount of water and gently apply to all teeth. Let it sit for two minutes and then rinse it off with water until there is no residue. Avoid using it in the case of porcelain crowns or fillings.

As you can see, all whitening products, whether they are homemade or those on the market, can erode tooth enamel, that’s why We recommend that you use them with caution, spaced out and progressively. A good sign that the enamel is thinning is sensitivity to cold or sweets, so pay attention and don’t give up on a white smile.
